Working Safely in Construction Environments
Maintaining Health and Safety at Work
Get your Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment to kickstart your journey into working in various construction settings. This certification is a prerequisite for securing a CSCS (Green) Card, an industry-wide standard which is essential for all construction professionals, regardless of skill level, trade or specialisms that may subsequently be developed. As a foundation qualification, it provides a comprehensive grounding in the principles of health and safety that are particular to the construction environment.
This fully online course equips you with the knowledge needed to grasp the importance of adhering to health and safety regulations in high-risk environments, whether the threats involve physical harm, damage to reputation, or costly equipment mishaps. It includes how to recognise hazards, avoiding, reducing, and mitigating against risks, understanding the uses of different types of fire extinguishers and the legislation that applies to construction environments. The course content is supported by current research and examples from the construction industry.
Tailored for those already working in the construction sector who need to refresh training or update knowledge, or those who aspire to join the construction industry, this flexible online course covers the essential knowledge required to work on construction sites and obtain a valid CSCS Card.
The process of obtaining a CSCS (Green) Card involves three key stages:
1. **Complete this Online Course**: Successfully finish this course and take a separate online exam, earning an accredited Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment —a crucial component of your CSCS card application.
2. **Take the CITB HS&E Test**: Book and complete the CITB* HS&E test at a nearby CITB Touch Screen Test centre. (*Construction Industry Training Board)
3. **Apply for Your Card**: Once you've passed both of the courses and the exams, apply for your CSCS card.
This entirely online course, including the final assessment, can be accessed, and completed on a PC or laptop. Throughout this interactive e-learning experience, you'll gain knowledge in key areas:
- Why Risk Assessment matters – it’s purposes, importance, and relevance.
- Safe manual handling techniques.
- Working safely at elevated heights.
- Identifying health risks.
- Safe practices around machinery, plant, and equipment.
This course package includes a Mock Assessment, or test, which will allow you to be sure you are ready to proceed to booking your exam. Once you are confident you can recall the knowledge you need under pressure, you should go ahead and schedule your online exam.
To book this final, online exam, simply send an email to our support team at [email protected], providing them with at least 72 hours' notice AHEAD of your exam slot, to test your proposed exam setup. The final examination questions are designed to support the integrity of the CSCS Card as you will learn about during the course.
This online examination can be taken from a laptop or desktop computer. * You will need a webcam in a place where you won’t be interrupted, whether at home, or with your employer’s co-operation in the workplace. The webcam records both your screen and you to ensure you can complete the questions independently, without notes or mobile telephone, in a process called online proctoring.
This online proctoring allows you to demonstrate you have mastered the construction safety knowledge required to progress on your own terms, where you feel comfortable and when you are ready. This reduces the worry and stress of this formal assessment required to obtain Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment certificate.
*Please note that the online qualification exam is not compatible with mobile devices or tablets.
