Asbestos has often been called ‘the hidden killer’ - indeed the
word asbestos today conjures up a genuine fear of irreversible
damage to health. This is borne out by statistics which suggest that asbestos is probably the biggest occupational killer in the UK.
In domestic properties, asbestos used as a building material
was at its peak between 1945 and 1980, and, in the UK, there
are over nine million houses of this age. In addition, it is
estimated that there are about one and a half million workplace properties with some form of asbestos in them.
So, while there’s relatively little chance of experiencing the
degree of exposure that many suffered during the 20th
century, the risk is still there, which is why this course – aimed
at non-licensed contractors/workers – is so important.
The duration of this course is 20 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
• Explain asbestos and the law Understand asbestos - what it is, where it is found and the danger it presents.

Our hands come into contact with many different surfaces and
substances, many of them harbouring bacteria and viruses
that transfer to our hands and from there either to other people,
or into our own body.
Good hand washing is the first line of defence against the
spread of many illnesses - from the common cold, to more
serious illnesses such as meningitis, hepatitis A, and food
poisoning. It is also crucial in preventing the spread of
influenza, and is a major weapon in the armoury to be
deployed against an influenza pandemic – the occurrence of
which experts describe as being ‘when’ not ‘if’.

The requirement under Regulation 4 of the Electricity at Work
Regulations is for “electrical systems to be constructed and
maintained so as to prevent danger at all times”.
The term ‘danger’ - which is unique to the Electricity at Work
Regulations - is defined as “the risk of injury from electric shock”,
which means that the Regulations therefore require all electrical
systems to be set up, and maintained, in such a way that they do
not allow anyone to suffer injury as a result of the electricity that
may flow within the system at any time.
Setting up and maintaining a system to achieve this requirement, needs all those involved to understand the role played by inspection, test, and maintenance of electrical systems.
The duration of this course is 20 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.
By the end of this course you will be able to:

Repetitive Strain Injuries are, in this technological age, an increasing risk to workers, and a challenge to organisational health and safety. Any RSI is painful and, in some cases, highly debilitating. It can lead to an inability to do certain jobs, or even work at all. For the individual this can have physical, mental, and financial costs, whilst for the organisation it can mean the additional costs of staff cover, recruitment, and job training. Absence due to sickness can also rob organisations of people with knowledge and skills that are vital for its success. A further problem is the increasing possibility of legal action taken by staff against employers who have failed to take appropriate steps to remove or reduce the risk of contracting RSI.
This course is a first important step in educating staff on what causes RSI, and how to avoid it.
The duration of this course is 20 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
• Undertake desktop stretches and animated exercises
• Understand how to prevent RSI
• State the symptoms of RSI

More than one third of all reportable ‘Over Three Day’ injuries, and nearly 10% of ‘Major Injuries’ are associated with manual handling – the transporting or supporting of loads by hand or by bodily force.
Many injuries are not immediate and obvious, but are cumulative resulting from repeated exposure to manual handling operations.
For workers, this high rate of injury is highly significant since such accidents and absences lead to potential loss of earnings, missed opportunities, and usually significant pain or discomfort.
By looking at how manual handling risks arise, and how to reduce or eliminate the likelihood of injury in different work environments, this course will help the learner to avoid joining future Health and Safety Executive injury statistics.
The duration of this course is 20 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.
This course will give you a deeper understanding of:
• Understand safe lifting technique
• Personal capacity for load handling
• The environment
• The load
• The task
• Reduce the risk of injury by assessing

Millions of people in the UK now use display screen equipment for a significant part of their work, and this rapid growth in the use of both fixed, and mobile, forms of DSE has been accompanied
by increasing concerns about an associated range of health and
safety problems.
The good news, however, is that most conditions can be
prevented by careful consideration of the way in which jobs are
organised, and by the provision of appropriate equipment and
workplaces.
This course aims to enable learners to understand, in overview,
the risks associated with DSE and the approaches to controlling
them.
This course is the first in a suite of four that deal with DSE in all
its forms, and how to avoid the negative effects on health that
arise from improper use. This course looks at a number of issues
that are common to all forms of DSE - subsequent courses will
consider fixed DSE, fixed workstations, and mobile DSE.
The duration of this course is 20 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.
By the end of this course you will be able to:

• State employer’s obligations in respect of DSE and workstation safety legislation
• Understand the nature and symptoms of the following conditions as they relate to DSE use:
• Upper Limb Disorders
• Visual disorders
• Stress and fatigue
Staying Safe with DSE - An Overview (ROSPA Endorsed)
• Understand how risks associated with DSE are controlled
• State employer’s obligations in respect of DSE and workstation safety legislation
• Understand the nature and symptoms of the following conditions as they relate to DSE use:
• Upper Limb Disorders
• Visual disorders
• Stress and fatigue
This course deals with DSE that is used in association with a
permanently sited workstation and is not designed to be carried
or moved from place to place – in other words the type of DSE
that is found in most office workplaces.
Millions of people in the UK use this type of display screen
equipment for a significant part of their work, and one of the
results of this widespread use is an increasing concern about
the associated range of health and safety problems.
This course, therefore, aims to enable the learner to work safely
when using fixed display screens, keyboards, and pointing
devices.
This course forms part of a suite of four courses, the first being a
general overview of working safely with DSE, the second being
this course, and the other two dealing with fixed workstations
and mobile DSE.
The duration of this course is 20 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
• State how to use a keyboard and computer mouse safely
• Describe how health problems can arise from incorrect use of a keyboard or mouse
• Understand how to position a display screen for safe working
• Explain the legal requirements for safe use of display screens

In order to comply with health and safety regulations – and
provide individuals with a comfortable working environment –
workstations need to be right for the person using it and the job
they do.
Under DSE health and safety legislation, any object in the users
immediate work environment is considered to be part of their
workstation. This includes the table or desk they work on, their
chair, the area under or next to their desk, and any equipment on
their desk.
This course aims to enable the learner to recognise the features
of a safe fixed workstation, and to set it up correctly and use it
safely.
The duration of this course is 20 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
• Describe the features of a safe workstation chair
• Understand the importance of sitting correctly
• Understand how to arrange a desktop working space correctly
• Acknowledge why breaks in workstation activity are important
• State the features of a safe workstation

Mobile Display Screen Equipment encompasses laptops,
notebooks, tablets, and smartphones, and its use is increasing
rapidly as multiple work locations and work on the move
becomes more widespread.
Mobile devices have many benefits; unfortunately, however, the
design features that make them mobile — such as small screens
and integrated keyboards — as well as their use in a wide range
of environments, bring their own health risks.
It’s important to remember that, although workstation guidelines
within the ’Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992’ are
mainly limited to fixed DSE, mobile DSE is also subject to the
Regulations if it is in prolonged use.
This course aims to enable the learner to recognise the risks
created by mobile DSE, and to address those risks appropriately.
The course forms part of a suite of four courses, the first being a
general overview of working safely with Display Screen
Equipment - or ‘DSE’ - the second dealing with fixed DSE,
the third covering fixed workstations, and the fourth being this
course.
The duration of this course is 20 minutes and can be completed over multiple sessions.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
• State how musculoskeletal problems can arise through the use of mobile DSE
• Understand the importance of regular rest breaks
• State how to limit manual handling risks associate with mobile DSE
• Understand how to manage the risks of musculoskeletal problems
• Understand how to set up a safe working environment for the use of mobile DSE
